What is Double-Sided Copper Tape?

Double-sided copper tape is a form of tape coated on both sides with a conductive acrylic adhesive. The adhesive layer contains conductive particles, so not only is the copper foil itself conductive, but the adhesive surface is also conductive. This type of double-sided conductive tape is typically very thin, with a thickness generally ranging from 0.03 millimeters to 0.05 millimeters. It can be applied to narrow gaps and irregular surfaces and is mainly used for grounding, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and sensor grounding.
This tape is not suitable for carrying high currents and is often used for signal connections and shielding. If you are selecting copper foil tape with a conductive adhesive, it is recommended that you identify its thickness, width, adhesive strength, and temperature resistance first, and then verify the actual grounding impedance and adhesive performance through sample testing.
How Does Double-Sided Copper Tape Work?
The operating principle of double-sided copper foil tape is not complicated. It consists of a central layer of copper foil, with conductive acrylic adhesive applied to both the top and bottom surfaces. This adhesive layer contains conductive particles. When the tape is bonded between two surfaces, current can flow not only through the copper foil itself but also through the adhesive layer from one side to the other. This is commonly referred to as XYZ three-directional conductivity.
In real-world applications, this copper foil tape with conductive adhesive is applied between PCBs, FPCs, shielding covers, or cases to form a low-resistance path that diverts interference currents. It is best suited for signal grounding, EMI shielding, and small-area electrical contacts, but is not recommended for carrying high currents.

The compliance of double-sided conductive tape directly impacts whether your products can pass certification. This is critical for the medical device and automotive electronics industries, where IATF 16949 and California Proposition 65 (CA Prop 65) are commonly required. We recommend that before purchasing copper foil tape with conductive adhesive, you ensure the supplier can provide complete test reports and then conduct your own reliability verification using samples. GALLOP offers OEM die-cutting and thermal simulation services to help you accurately measure grounding impedance and EMI shielding performance in advance, thereby reducing the risk of issues during production.
Applications of Double-Sided Copper Tape

PCB & FPC Grounding
Double-sided copper tape can be applied directly between the board and the chassis, avoiding the need for additional holes or screws and saving a step in the process. It is better suited for small-area grounding points than ordinary copper foil tape, making it particularly useful when your product has limited space or a complex structure. This tape helps you create shorter, more stable ground paths, reducing the impact of EMI noise on signals.
EMI Shield & Gasket Attachment
Using a copper tape EMI shielding solution can simplify the assembly of EMI shields and EMI gaskets. The adhesive layer of double-sided copper tape is conductive, filling gaps along the bond line and reducing leakage at shielding seams. If you are responsible for EMC testing, we recommend using samples to verify the shielding effectiveness of your enclosure gaps in advance.
Sensor & Module Grounding
If sensor grounding is unstable, the signal-to-noise ratio will suffer. Double-sided conductive tape provides a reliable ground connection within sensor modules, making it particularly suitable for products with high signal quality requirements, such as in-vehicle cameras and millimeter-wave radar. You should consider a copper tape conductive adhesive solution when selecting design options. It offers advantages over traditional soldering or screw fastening in both small-area mounting and rapid bonding.
Automotive & New Energy Grounding
Automotive electronics and new energy equipment demand higher levels of reliability and temperature resistance. Copper foil adhesive tape operates stably within a temperature range of -40°C to 121°C. When selecting a product, be sure to conduct high- and low-temperature cycling tests and ground impedance tests on samples in advance.
Lab & SEM Sample Preparation
In laboratory and research settings, copper foil tape is frequently used for securing SEM samples and connecting electrochemical electrodes. It is conductive on both sides, allowing samples to be directly adhered to the stage. This eliminates the need to apply conductive adhesive, saving time and effort. If you frequently perform scanning electron microscopy or electrochemical testing, double-sided conductive tape is a consumable worth keeping on hand. It is easy to cut, leaves minimal residue, and improves sample preparation efficiency.
How to Choose Between Double-Sided Copper Tape and Single-Sided Copper Tape?

Conductivity Path: Single vs Double-Sided
First, consider the current path. With single-sided copper foil tape, only the copper foil side is conductive; the adhesive side is not. With double-sided copper foil tape, both the copper foil and the adhesive layer are conductive, achieving Z-axis conductivity.
If your application requires electrical conductivity between the top and bottom surfaces, for example, grounding a PCB to the chassis, then double-sided conductive tape is more fitting. If you’re simply applying it to a surface for shielding or grounding and don’t need to pass through the adhesive layer, then single-sided copper foil tape is sufficient.
EMI Shielding Requirements
If your product focuses on EMI shielding, especially when gaps or gaps between bonding lines need to be filled, double-sided copper shielding tape is more effective. Single-sided copper shielding tape is suited for covering large surface areas, but an insulating layer may form between the upper and lower contact surfaces, undermining the shielding effectiveness. When performing EMC remediation, you should first analyze the interference paths before deciding between single-sided and double-sided tape.
Bonding & Grounding Needs
The advantage of double-sided adhesive tape is that it is both adhesive and conductive, effectively providing grounding and fastening in a single step. When designing sensor grounding or securing shielding enclosures, using copper tape with conductive adhesive avoids the need for additional soldering or screw fastening. Single-sided copper foil tape is more often used for surface bonding, such as wrapping cables or attaching to the inside of enclosures, and is also less expensive.
Assembly Process & Space Constraints
For space-constrained devices, such as mobile phones and in-vehicle modules, double-sided copper foil tape removes the need for connectors and reduces the footprint. If production line cycle time and yield are priorities, double-sided copper tape, which can be die-cut and applied directly, offers greater stability than manual soldering or dispensing. Single-sided copper foil tape, with its high flexibility, is better suited for manual operations or simple wrapping, but it has only one conductive side.
Cost & Supply Considerations
When budgets are tight, single-sided copper foil tape is often more cost-effective. But if poor grounding leads to failed EMC testing or post-sales issues, the rework costs will far exceed the difference in material prices. We recommend that you first verify with a small batch, compare the actual grounding impedance and shielding effectiveness of single-sided copper foil tape and double-sided conductive tape, and then decide which one to use.
Double-sided copper tape must have a copper foil substrate, and while the adhesive layer is usually conductive, the key is the copper itself. Double-sided conductive tape, in contrast, covers a broader range; the substrate can be copper foil, aluminum foil, conductive fabric, or even non-woven fabric, as long as both sides are conductive.
In short, double-sided copper tape is a type of double-sided conductive tape, but the reverse is not necessarily true. Don’t rely solely on the name; verify that both the base material and the adhesive layer are conductive, especially if your design requires shielding performance or corrosion resistance.
Yes, and it’s quite common. In copper tape EMI shielding solutions, double-sided copper foil tape can be applied to shielding enclosures, chassis seams, FPC grounding points, and other locations. The conductive adhesive layer fills gaps to reduce electromagnetic leakage. During EMC remediation, if interference is primarily leaking through gaps between bonding lines, using double-sided copper tape is more effective than regular copper foil tape. This is because it is conductive on both sides, creating a low-impedance path between the two surfaces.
The thicker the copper foil, the lower the DC resistance and the higher the conductivity. Keep in mind, however, that the resistance of double-sided copper tape isn’t solely due to the copper foil; the conductive particles in the adhesive layer also contribute. In particular, when current flows along the Z-axis, the resistance of the adhesive layer often accounts for the lion’s share.
At high frequencies, the skin effect causes the vast majority of the current to concentrate near the surface of the conductor; as a result, the improvement in shielding performance achieved by increasing the thickness of the copper foil gradually diminishes. If your application involves low frequencies and high currents, thin copper foil may generate heat. You should first measure your actual loop resistance and heat generation before deciding whether to use thicker foil.
Consider the following factors: Frequency of interference and shielding location. If the issue involves gaps or grounding points, choose double-sided conductive tape with a conductive adhesive layer to ensure electrical continuity along the Z-axis. If you’re only applying a surface layer, standard copper shielding tape will suffice.
Then verify the thickness, adhesion, and temperature resistance. Always conduct actual tests on samples: apply the tape to your enclosure or board, and measure the shielding effectiveness and ground impedance. Don’t wait until mass production to discover any issues.
The main difference between copper foil tape and aluminum foil tape lies in their electrical conductivity and stability. Copper has a lower bulk resistivity than aluminum and usually offers better shielding performance.
Particularly in humid or high-temperature environments, an oxide layer tends to form on the surface of aluminum foil, which increases contact resistance. If you’re working on outdoor equipment or automotive electronics, we recommend copper foil adhesive tape over aluminum foil to save costs, as poor contact later on can be very difficult to trace.
