What is a Graphite Foil Roll?

A graphite foil roll is essentially a flexible graphite sheet rolled from expanded graphite. It is commonly supplied in rolls and is primarily used in high-temperature sealing and heat transfer applications.
It is a type of flexible graphite material that can be cut to size as needed to create graphite gasket sheets or various types of gaskets. It has a very wide temperature resistance range, able to withstand temperatures from low levels up to 3,000°C (under vacuum). But it is not a one-size-fits-all solution; it is not well-suited for use with strong oxidizing acids. Before selecting a product, it is best to confirm the medium and temperature to ensure you choose the correct grade, such as high-purity graphite foil or reinforced graphite foil roll.
How Does a Graphite Foil Roll Work?
The working principle of a graphite foil roll is not complex. It is formed by calendering expanded graphite; at the microscopic level, the graphite layers are stacked one on top of another like fish scales.
When pressed between two flanges or contact surfaces, these layers deform and fill the microscopic pits on the surface, forming a dense sealing layer. Its compressibility allows it to adapt to minute surface irregularities, achieving effective sealing without the need for excessively thick gaskets. It also possesses inherent self-lubricating properties, making it less likely to stick during disassembly. When selecting a product, you should primarily consider the temperature and pressure of the medium, as well as whether it will come into contact with strong oxidizing acids; under such conditions, graphite foil may oxidize, so it is best to confirm this with us in advance.
Graphite Foil Roll: Compliance & Quality Assurance

Compliance for graphite foil rolls essentially hinges on two factors: first, whether the material itself meets environmental requirements; and second, whether the production process has consistent quality control. Common standards include RoHS and REACH, and some customers may also require CMRT or California Prop 65 compliance.
We take a meticulous approach to quality control. From the initial screening of natural flake graphite through acid washing, high-temperature expansion, and calendering, every step is subject to inspection. Our production lines are equipped with infrared thickness measurement and early-warning systems, allowing us to maintain thickness tolerances within a very narrow range. Our quality management system covers both ISO 9001 and IATF 16949, ensuring that batch consistency is backed by data. If you are sourcing high-purity graphite foil or graphite gasket material, we recommend asking the supplier directly for RoHS/REACH test reports and factory inspection records. This is far more reliable than simply reviewing a brochure.
Applications of Graphite Foil Roll

Semiconductor & Thermal Management
Graphite foil rolls are used in semiconductor and thermal management applications because flexible graphite has excellent thermal conductivity in the in-plane direction, allowing it to quickly dissipate localized heat from chips. This gives graphite foil a distinct advantage in applications where lightweight, thin structure, and in-plane heat uniformity are key design requirements.
Industrial Sealing & Gaskets
Graphite foil rolls are often cut into graphite gasket sheets for use in flange and valve seals, or they can be processed directly as graphite rolls for gaskets. Flexible graphite sheets are inherently heat-resistant, chemically inert, and have excellent compression recovery, allowing them to fill in minor irregularities on flange surfaces. They are less prone to aging and failure than rubber or asbestos gaskets, extending maintenance intervals.
Chemical Processing & Power Generation
In chemical processing and power generation applications, sealing materials must withstand temperature, pressure, and corrosion. Flexible graphite exhibits good chemical resistance in a variety of acidic and alkaline media; its fitness for use with strong oxidizing chemicals, though, must be verified. As a graphite gasket material, it helps effectively reduce the risk of leaks.
Energy Storage & Fuel Cells
In the fields of energy storage and fuel cells, expanded graphite foil or expanded graphite sheet can be used for bipolar plates or passive thermal management layers. It offers excellent electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance, along with uniform thermal conductivity. In batteries and energy storage systems, graphite-based thermal management layers can dissipate localized heat and enable superior temperature control in accordance with the overall thermal design.
Specialized Industrial Applications
Flexible graphite foil rolls are also used in certain non-standard applications, such as glass hot-press demolding, welding backing, or laser protection. They are self-lubricating, non-stick, and resistant to high temperatures, and they can reflect some laser energy, making them viable as demolding foils or simple heat shields. You can treat them as a general-purpose flexible graphite base material and cut them to size as needed, which is more convenient than stocking multiple specialized materials.
How to Choose the Right Graphite Foil Roll?

Start with Your Application
Don’t rush to look at the specifications just yet; think about where you plan to use it. Will it be for high-temperature flange gaskets, thermal conductivity and heat dissipation, or fuel cell bipolar plates? The requirements for graphite foil rolls vary widely depending on the application. We recommend that you first list the temperature, pressure, and medium of the actual operating conditions, then work backward to determine which type of flexible graphite foil you need. This will help you avoid purchasing the wrong product.
Check Purity and Grade
Purity directly determines the application. For general industrial sealing, a graphite sheet with 98% carbon content is sufficient. If it’s for semiconductors, nuclear power, or contamination-sensitive industries, however, you’ll need to choose high-purity graphite foil, with ash content preferably kept below 0.15%. Don’t underestimate this small amount of impurity; it can affect product yield or long-term stability. We can provide batch inspection reports.
Decide If You Need Reinforcement
For applications involving high pressure, large diameters, or repeated assembly and disassembly, we recommend reinforced graphite foil rolls. These usually incorporate a layer of stainless steel or perforated steel, providing greater resistance to pressure and blowout. Remember, reinforcement reduces flexibility, so for standard flange sealing, a standard flexible graphite roll is sufficient. You’ll need to balance strength and flexibility; there’s no need to pay extra for performance you won’t use.
Consider Adhesive Backing
For applications requiring quick positioning or adhesion to complex surfaces, consider an adhesive-backed graphite foil roll. It eliminates the need for manual adhesive application and facilitates die-cutting and assembly. Exercise caution, as the adhesive may fail if the operating temperature exceeds its temperature tolerance range, for example, during prolonged exposure to temperatures above 150°C.
Both are made of the same material: flexible graphite. The difference is in their form: graphite foil rolls are supplied in rolls, making them suited for continuous die-cutting and automated feeding, with minimal waste. Graphite sheets are pre-cut flat sheets, better fitting small batches or manual operations. Rolls are more cost-effective for mass production; be sure to confirm whether you need rolls or sheets before placing an order to avoid confusion.
Higher density generally results in better sealing performance and thermal conductivity. This is because the graphite layers are more tightly laminated, with fewer pores and more complete contact. But higher density means reduced flexibility and poorer compression recovery; when used on rough flange surfaces, it may actually fail to fill the gaps properly. Lower density is softer and better suited for low-pressure seals or irregular surfaces.
In general industrial applications, graphite gasket sheets commonly range from 0.7 to 1.0 g/cm³, while thermal applications may reach 1.5 or even higher. You should prioritize the density range based on your operating conditions, rather than focusing solely on thickness.
Copper foil provides uniform thermal conductivity but is heavy and prone to oxidation. Graphite foil rolls are lightweight and can achieve in-plane thermal conductivity of 500–600 W/m·K. They are effective for spreading heat across a large area but show limited thermal conductivity in the vertical direction. Choose graphite foil for lightweight designs and uniform heat distribution; choose copper foil when rapid heat dissipation is required. We recommend making your decision based on the direction of heat flow and the spatial configuration.
Graphite paper is usually thinner; some types are made from graphite powder mixed with a small amount of binder. It has low strength and average thermal conductivity, and is often used inside electronic devices as a heat spreader or gasket. Graphite foil rolls are generally made by compressing pure expanded graphite without binders.
They come in a wide range of thicknesses, have higher temperature resistance, and can be used for industrial sealing. If you’re working on high-temperature flange seals, don’t settle for graphite paper; its compressive strength and creep resistance are insufficient. Yet for heat dissipation in lightweight electronic devices, graphite paper may be sufficient and is also less expensive. The key factors are temperature, pressure, and the medium involved.
Start by checking the flatness of the sealing surface. The more uneven the flange, the greater the thickness you’ll need. Common thicknesses range from 0.5 to 2.0 mm, and for rough surfaces, you may need up to 3.0 mm. For thermal applications, thinner foils are preferred; 0.1–0.2 mm is sufficient, though foils that are too thin are prone to tearing. We recommend testing several thicknesses first to see if the residual thickness after compression meets sealing requirements before finalizing a standard.
