Applications of Graphite Sheets

Whether it be high-performance electronic devices with demanding thermal management requirements or compact wearable devices, they can all be utilised.

Exceptional electrical conductivity enhances current transmission efficiency and reduces losses. Simultaneously, they help in heat dissipation and improve safety.

As sealing elements, they withstand high temperatures and pressures without contracting or expanding due to temperature fluctuations.

High flexibility enables resistance to bending in flexible electronic devices such as displays and sensors, delivering high performance and durability.

With high mechanical properties and lightweight construction, while delivering exceptional stability and impact resistance.

High-efficiency heat dissipation enhances the brightness stability of lighting systems and get a longer service life.

Provides both thermal dissipation and electromagnetic shielding, enhancing signal integrity for routers, base station modules, and similar devices.
Graphite sheets, as thermal spreader materials, rapidly diffuse heat generated by components across a larger surface area due to their high in-plane thermal conductivity. This reduces localised hotspots, allowing heat to dissipate more efficiently through heat sinks, enclosures, or other cooling components.
Graphite sheets serve to dissipate heat. They disperse thermal energy laterally. Thermal pads are used to fill gaps. They enhance thermal contact between uneven surfaces and facilitate vertical heat transfer. They may be used in combination.
Graphite sheets achieve better in-plane thermal conductivity, whereas copper foil has greater longitudinal thermal conductivity. Furthermore, graphite sheets are lighter and thinner, making them easier to integrate into compact electronic designs.
Benefiting from its good resistance to high temperatures, corrosion and oxidation, GALLOP INNOTEK graphite sheets offer outstanding stability. They do not dry out or pump out. When correctly selected and employed, they can provide excellent resistance to long-term ageing.
Sure. Graphite sheets can maintain stable temperatures for operational EV battery packs, enhancing safety. Moreover, they are exceptionally lightweight, further reducing energy loss.
This requires selection based on your specific application. Excessively thick graphite sheets may increase thermal resistance and add to the budget, whilst sheets that are too thin may fail to achieve satisfactory heat dissipation. GALLOP INNOTEK provides one-to-one selection guidance to minimise errors.
What is the Graphite Sheet?
The graphite sheet is a highly flexible, lightweight, and thin sheet material manufactured from natural or synthetic graphite. Its unique crystalline structure makes it have exceptional in-plane thermal conductivity, achieving rapid heat diffusion on the material’s surface. Graphite sheets are thinner than graphite plates. Compared to graphite rolls, their thickness and shape are more precisely controllable. Benefiting from outstanding in-plane thermal conductivity, extreme lightness, and thinness, they serve as thermal spreaders to enhance heat dissipation efficiency in electronic devices, batteries, LEDs, and similar applications.
Types of Graphite Sheet
Flexible Graphite Sheets and Rigid Graphite Sheets
- Flexible Graphite Sheets: Flexible Graphite Sheets: These sheets have lower hardness and greater thinness than conventional graphite sheets. Their superior flexibility allows them to withstand more severe bending without fracturing, resulting in higher fatigue resistance. Their high compressibility offers superior conformability to substrates or surfaces. They serve as fillers for thermal interface materials, heat sinks, and thermal shields, facilitating heat dissipation, and you can use them in electronics, LED assemblies, battery modules, and similar applications.
- Rigid Graphite Sheets: Rigid graphite sheets, also known as reinforced graphite sheets, enhance the rigidity of graphite sheets by incorporating materials such as PET, PI, fibreglass, or even stainless steel. This results in greater hardness and a smoother surface finish. Consequently, they are simpler to install and offer high mechanical strength, making them suitable for applications in automotive electronics, industrial control systems, and similar environments.
Pyrolytic Graphite Sheet
Pyrolytic graphite sheets are manufactured through high-temperature pyrolysis and vapour deposition of carbon sources at extremely high temperatures. Their in-plane thermal conductivity is higher than that of natural graphite sheets, reaching 1000–1900 W/m·K. It achieves superior high-temperature resistance (with a melting point exceeding 3000°C) and corrosion resistance, allowing you to use it in harsher environments while maintaining stable performance. Its thinner thickness, approximately 20–100 μm, makes it suitable for applications with space constraints.
Natural Graphite Sheet and Artificial Graphite Sheet
- Natural Graphite Sheet: Natural graphite sheets derive from readily available raw materials without additional synthetic processing, typically having higher density and a coarse texture. Their thermal conductivity ranges approximately between 300–700 W/m·K, lower than that of artificial graphite sheets. Consequently, they command a lower price point, making them suitable for projects with tighter budgets and less demanding thermal load requirements.
- Artificial Graphite Sheet: Artificial graphite flakes are manufactured through the calendering of synthetic graphite, allowing better control over dimensions, thickness, and performance characteristics compared to natural graphite flakes. They have higher purity and lower density, achieving exceptional thermal conductivity (approximately 1350 W/m·K). Furthermore, they have greater flexibility than natural graphite flakes. Due to their more reliable performance characteristics, albeit at a higher cost, they are very suitable for applications in high-end electronic devices and similar fields.
Composite Graphite Sheet
Graphite sheets can be combined with other materials to achieve more specialised properties, meeting specific application requirements. For instance, incorporating an adhesive backing facilitates easier assembly. They can also be laminated with metallic layers(such as copper foil sheet or aluminium foil) to enhance corrosion resistance and electromagnetic shielding performance. Composite graphite sheets are commonly used in automotive applications, industrial sealing, and thermal management for electronic equipment.
Graphite Sheet vs Roll: Which Should You Choose?
Graphite sheets and graphite rolls are manufactured from identical materials and have the same properties. Their differing supply formats render them suitable for distinct products and production methods. Selecting the right one enhances product reliability and improves production efficiency.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Graphite Sheet
Graphite sheets are pre-formed and precisely cut products supplied by manufacturers. They offer easy installation requiring no secondary processing or cutting, thereby reducing installation costs. They are suitable for both semi-automated and manual production lines. Moreover, thanks to customised precision cutting, they can be utilised for products with complex or irregular shapes. In prototyping and R&D projects, they facilitate easier modification and more flexible machining, lowering initial investment costs for OEM/ODM operations. However, they command a higher price point.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Graphite Roll
Graphite sheet material is typically processed into continuous lengths (up to several thousand metres). Due to its low initial cost, it is a highly cost-effective option for mass production. Compatible with different automated cutting and laminating equipment, it is specifically designed for continuous production on automated lines. It achieves great efficiency in high-volume manufacturing, maximises material utilisation, and achieves superior control over product quality.
How to Choose between Graphite Sheet and Roll?
For products in the prototyping and R&D stages, or those requiring frequent modifications, graphite sheets are the better choice. They are well-suited for small to medium-volume production and the processing of complex-shaped electronic components. Graphite sheets also excel in applications demanding stringent dimensional tolerances. Conversely, graphite rolls are better suited for large-scale production lines and automated die-cutting and roll-to-roll processes, mass production of standardised products with established designs.
